An invention to assist the visually impaired in movement; a Service Learning endeavour to integrate migrant workers into the Singapore community; an app that promotes hawker culture to youths - what do these have in common? For one, they are all projects initiated and executed by Hwa Chongians.

Under the Project Work (PW) programme, students are able to work collaboratively on any area of interest, be it contribution to the community, conducting scientific, humanities or linguistic research and shedding light on an academic topic, or solving a current societal issue and even emerging problems of the future.

From Secondary Two, students embark on a year-long journey of imaginative and innovative inquiry with the guidance of teacher- or expert-mentors. Project Work forms a springboard for the exploration of interests and passions while others lead students towards platforms like the International  Science & Engineering Fairs and the MOE's Humanities and Social Sciences Research Programme Symposium.

Testimonial

““Personally, serving as the General Secretary of Project Integrate was a role that has been nothing short of fulfilling. Through the course of the year, our team faced multiple challenges - with the biggest one being that we were unable to accommodate the busy schedules of the migrant workers.

However, our team managed to work around the various constraints, organising fortnightly sports sessions and activities for different cultural festivities. In terms of outreach, we were also able to spread awareness about our cause through physical and online means, with our Panel Discussion with Migrant Workers Centre being conducted in front of the entire lower secondary cohort during Racial Harmony Day.

Overall, service learning has really helped broaden my worldview and allowed me to encounter perspectives I would have never previously considered. Most importantly, I was able to really enjoy the experience because of the people that served alongside me - my teammates.”
